Calvary Temple Christian Center Ministries was founded by Reverend John R. Thompson, Sr. Reverend Thompson accepted Christ as his Savior in 1974. He was called into the ministry in 1985. He founded Calvary in the fall of 1992 with his wife Jenice R. Thompson, and one son, John R. Thompson, II (at that time) and approximately 5 mothers as starting members. The membership quickly grew to around 20 within a two month period. Their first place of worship was a small building adjacent to a three-family home on the corner of Irion and Walnut Streets in Waterbury, CT. They had church in that little sanctuary as though they were in a cathedral with 1,000 people. The Lord’s hand was certainly in Pastor Thompson’s leadership from the beginning of the ministry. They outgrew that place of worship and began searching for another by the end of their second year. In August of 1994, just as they were about to establish a permanent place of worship in Waterbury, the Lord closed the door in that city and opened it in Bridgeport.

Without missing one Sunday in the pulpit, Pastor Thompson sought out a large empty and somewhat abandoned former warehouse. He then gathered the brethren together from a membership of close to 60, and went to work revitalizing their new church home. With hard work and determination their doors were opened for worship at 541-543 Fairfield Avenue in September of 1994. In August of the year 2000, the Lord blessed Calvary to purchase our own building at 319 Barnum Avenue Bridgeport, CT in which you can sit today. From the beginning until now, Calvary has greatly increased. They are individuals from all walks of life. Calvary reaches out in particular to those who are un-churched. Those who have addictions, broken homes, abuse, etc. Calvary has been a life changing experience for so many, even others who have gone on to other ministries, yet abstaining from their former addictions. Our vision and goal is to win thousands for the Lord. Pastor Thompson also plans to open the doors of other ministries.
